WEIGHTS AND MEASURES

Units of Measurement Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2002

  Made 1st March 2002 
  Coming into operation 8th April 2002 

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, being a Department designated[1] for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972[2] in relation to units of measurement to be used for economic, health, safety or administrative purposes, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by that section, and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations: - 

Citation and commencement
     1. These Regulations may be cited as the Units of Measurement Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2002 and shall come into operation on 8th April 2002.

Interpretation
    
2.  - (1) The Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954[3] shall apply to these Regulations as it applies to an Act of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

    (2) In these Regulations "the 1981 Order" means the Weights and Measures (Northern Ireland) Order 1981[4].

Amendment of the 1981 Order
     3.  - (1) The 1981 Order shall be amended as follows.

    (2) In Article 6 in paragraph (7A)[
5] after the words "the use for trade" there shall be inserted "until 31st December 2009".

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations.)


These Regulations implement in part the amendments made by Directive 1999/103/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (O.J. No. L34, 9.2.2000, p. 17) to Council Directive 80/181/EEC (O.J. No. L39, 15.2.80, p. 40) which relates to the use of units of measurement for economic, public health, public safety or administrative purposes.

The Regulations amend the Weights and Measures (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 by inserting a deadline of 31st December 2009 for the end of the authorised use of supplementary indications in conjunction with metric units.
