The Local Authorities (Armorial Bearings) Order 1976

At the Court at Buckingham Palace, the 19th day of May 1976

Present,

The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Her Majesty, by virtue and in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 247 of the Local Government Act 1972, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:-

1. This Order may be cited as the Local Authorities (Armorial Bearings) Order 1976 and shall come into operation on 21st June 1976.

2. The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply for the interpretation of this Order as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

3. Subject to Article 4 of this Order, there is hereby authorised the bearing and use by a local authority specified in the first column of the Schedule to this Order of the armorial bearings lawfully borne and used before 1st April 1974 by the local authority specified in the second column of that Schedule in respect of the first-mentioned authority.

4. Any armorial bearings the bearing and use of which is authorised by Article 3 of this Order shall be first exemplified according to the laws of arms and recorded in the College of Arms, otherwise such authority shall be void and of no effect.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order confers on the local authorities specified in the first column of the Schedule to the Order the right to bear and use the armorial bearings formerly borne and used by the local authorities specified in the second column.
