These Regulations amend the National Health Service (Charges for Drugs and Appliances) Regulations 1980 by increasing by an average of 7·8 per cent the charges payable for the supply under the National Health Service of drugs and appliances. The amount of each increase in respect of drugs and various appliances is shown in Schedule 1 to these Regulations. In particular, the standard prescription charge in respect of the supply of a drug or appliance (other than certain specified appliances) by a chemist as part of pharmaceutical services is increased from £2·40 to £2·60 and a corresponding increase is made in respect of supply by doctors and to outpatients.
These Regulations add those who have not yet attained the age of 19 years and who are in qualifying full-time education to the list of those exempt from prescription charges.
Regulation 4 of these Regulations revokes regulations which prescribed the amounts of charges which are now superseded.
1977 c. 49. See section 128(1) for the definitions of "prescribed" and "regulations". Section 83(a) was amended by the Health Services Act 1980 (c. 53) ( "the 1980 Act"), Schedule 1, paragraph 64 and paragraph 1 of Schedule 12 was amended by the 1980 Act, Schedule 5, paragraph 1.
