Whereas a draft of this Order was laid before Parliament in accordance with the provisions of section 167(1) of the Social Security Act 1975(1) and approved by resolution of each House of Parliament;
Now, therefore, the Secretary of State for Social Services, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 20(1A) of the Social Security Act 1975(2) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Unemployment Benefit (Disqualification Period) Order 1988 and shall come into force on 11th April 1988.
2. In section 20(1) of the Social Security Act 1975 (other disqualifications, etc)(3) for the figure "13" there shall be substituted the figure "26".

This Order amends section 20(1) of the Social Security Act 1975 to extend the maximum period of disqualification for receiving unemployment benefit from 13 weeks to 26 weeks in the circumstances specified in that section (voluntary unemployment etc).
1975 c. 14; section 167(1) was repealed in part by the Social Security Pensions Act 1975 (c. 60), Schedule 5 and was amended by the Social Security Act 1979 (c. 18), section 4(2); the Social Security (Contributions) Act 1981 (c. 1), section 4(5), and by the Social Security Act 1986 (c. 50), sections 43(3), 62(3) and 74(4).
Section 20(1A) was inserted by the Social Security Act 1986 (c. 50), section 43(3).
Section 20(1) was amended by the Social Security Act 1986, section 43(2).
