The Forgery and Counterfeiting (Protected Coins) Order 1999

The Treasury, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 27(1) of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981(1) hereby make the following Order-�

1. This Order may be cited as the Forgery and Counterfeiting (Protected Coins) Order 1999 and shall come into force on 17th August 1999.

2.-(1) Any euro coin produced in accordance with Council Regulation No. 975/98/EC(2) by or at the instance of a participating member State is hereby specified for the purposes of Part II of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.

(2) In paragraph (1), "participating member State" means a member State which has adopted the single currency in accordance with the treaty establishing the European Community.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order specifies euro coins as protected coins for the purposes of Part II of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981 which (amongst other things) creates various offences relating to the counterfeiting of protected coins. Other protected coins include any coin which is customarily used as money in any country.
