EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order revokes earlier Orders in Council which gave the force of law to two Agreements made in 1972 between the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications and the States of Jersey and the States of Guernsey respectively. They handed over to Jersey and Guernsey the Post Office's statutory privilege over the administration of telecommunications services in the Channel Islands. The effect of the revocation of the earlier Orders is that the Agreements are terminated.

Notes:

[1] 1969 c. 48. The British Telecommunications Act 1981 (c. 38), section 89 and Schedule 6 Part II repealed section 24 of the 1969 Act. The repeal extended to the Channel Islands by virtue of section 89(5) of the 1981 Act.back

[2] The Postal Services Act 2000 (c. 26), section 127(6) and Schedule 9 repealed section 87 of the Post Office Act 1969, but that repeal has not yet come into force. References in that section to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications were substituted by references to the Secretary of State by virtue of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (Dissolution) Order 1974 (S.I. 1974/691).back
