This Order revokes the Orders in Council listed in the Schedule.
Those Orders specified offences under the laws of various countries which corresponded to certain offences specified in Schedule 1 to the Football Spectators Act 1989 (c. 37). Under section 22 of that Act, proceedings may be commenced before a magistrates' court against a person who has been convicted of such an offence, with the result that a football banning order may be made against such a person. The Orders are being revoked because section 22 has fallen out of use, given that there are alternative routes to securing a banning order under the 1989 Act; in particular via section 14B, which allows for a banning order to be made where an individual has caused or contributed to violence or disorder abroad.
1989 c. 37; Section 22 was amended by: section 1(2)(b) and (5) of the Football (Offences and Disorder) Act 1999 (c. 21); section 1 of, and paragraphs 9 to 11 and 17 of Schedule 2 to, the Football (Disorder) Act 2000 (c. 25); and section 109(1) of, and paragraph 335 of Schedule 8 to, the Courts Act 2003 (c. 39).
